Ithaca Book Sale

For more information about the sale and Friends of Tompkins Public Library go to www.booksale.org

Summer Sale Hours: Daily hours are 11am – 7pm. Senior Day: The first three hours on Monday, July 13, will be reserved for seniors (60 yrs and over) and people with disabilities. Because of the reduced number of people allowed in the building, we hope to have a Webcam live on Facebook for shoppers to consult before they visit.

Special Covid-19 Precautions: To protect shoppers and our volunteers, we will only admit a maximum of 50 customers at a time into the Book Sale building. We will be cleaning extensively before we open each day and hand sanitizer stations will be located throughout the building. As required by NYS law and our policy, all shoppers and volunteer helpers must wear face masks and maintain proper social distance. All shoppers must stay at least 6 feet away from anyone not in your party, and there will be line markings on the floor throughout the building. At checkout, we will ask you to organize your own items in the A/B/C categories so that we can do a visual count, without having to handle them.

First Saturday, July 4: Registration for first day line numbers will be held at the Book Sale building (509 Esty St) on Friday, July 3, 6:00-8:00 PM. There will be no “overnight camping.” Each individual who wants to reserve a place in the first day line must register in person with ID, and must bring the same ID to check in on Saturday morning. No one will be permitted to register or check in for another person.

Book Sale Pricing: Most of the income from our book sales is used to provide annual grant to the Tompkins County Public Library. Due to the economic crisis, TCPL’s operating budget has been cut significantly this year and thus the library needs our support more than ever. Thus, we have made several changes in our pricing policy for this sale only. Item prices will remain the same all three days of the first weekend, but there is no limit to the number of items that you may purchase on the first day! Prices will be reduced daily beginning Saturday, July 11, and the sale will end with two “Dime Days”, Sunday & Monday, July 19 & 20. “Bag Day” ($1 per bag of items) is on Tuesday, July 21.

Collector’s Corner: Collector’s Corner hours will vary so please call ahead. Once Collector’s Corner List goes live you are welcome to use that information to order online. Please send requests to folspecials@gmail.com.

The Book Sale is the fundraising arm of the Friends of the Tompkins County Public Library. We raise money for the Friends through our May and October sales every year, to fund the Friends programs and grants.

The Friends’ mission is to promote reading by

  • Placing more books in more hands
  • Awarding grants to libraries and community organizations
  • Advocating for library funding, and
  • Encouraging volunteerism

After meeting Book Sale expenses (maintenance on the warehouse building, utilities, and other expenses, almost all our labor is provided by volunteers), we give grants to the Tompkins County Public Library and to the the Finger Lakes Library System.

We also award grants to not-for-profit organizations in Tompkins County for reading-related materials, give educational grants to residents of Tompkins County pursuing library degrees, and contribute to continuing education programs for county and school library personnel.
